Dr. Shujun Ye is professor of Hydrogeology, Dept. of Hydrosciences, School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, Nanjing University, China, and member of the UNESCO Land Subsidence International Initiative (LaSII). She received her Bachelor degree from Jilin University in 1997, and Master’s degree in 2000 and Ph.D. in 2004 from Nanjing University. Dr. Ye has studied ground deformation related to groundwater extraction since 2001 by developing a regional land subsidence model embodying complicated deformation characteristics. She implemented an original numerical technique known as Multiscale Finite Element Method to simulate land subsidence at regional scales and applied the technique to model subsidence in Shanghai and other cities in South Yangtze Delta area, one of the areas most affected by land subsidence in China. Since 2014, she has cooperated with colleagues from LaSII on numerical simulation of earth fissures by developing three-dimensional geomechanical, Finite Element and Interface Element modelling approaches which have been applied to Queretaro, Mexico, and Wuxi, China, respectively. Her research interests concern groundwater flow in confined/phreatic aquifer systems, land subsidence due to groundwater depletion, earth fissures triggered by groundwater pumping, model development and application to regional-scale problems, numerical methods to solve mathematical models, and the application of InSAR to measure and map horizontal and vertical ground motions. She has been Principal Investigator in many Chinese research projects related to land subsidence, earth fissures, multiphase flow, and remediation of groundwater contaminants, including projects funded by National Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Ministry of Land and Natural Resources, Chinese Geological Survey, etc., and the international project funded by UNESCO IGCP program.
