LaSII member, Dora Carreón (Institute of Geosciences, UNAM, Campus Juriquilla, Mexico), will give a Keynote presentation at the 37th International Geological Congress in Bursan, Korea, to be held from 25 to 31th August 2024, in the session titled Geohazards. Session 2. Outreach tools as a way to increase preparedness for geological hazards (Convenor: Maria ORTUNO Co-convenor: Jin-Hyuck CHOI, KIGAM, Daejeon, Republic of Korea).
Session description: Many examples worldwide have shown that education on natural hazards is fundamental for the capacity of the population of co-living with natural disasters. Within this session, we invite contributors to share their experiences on the outreach of geology in general, with a special focus on the approaches that cover geological hazards and applied or designed for any setting, from communities to schools or higher education. In the next decades, the impacts of climate change and the increase of population will pose a main challenge to the society. Our ability to anticipate the natural disasters will have to be of first priority to avoid the loss of human lives and the large economic losses associated to them, and education, conceived as a 360º phenomenon, will play a main role on it.
